SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE IN CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY:
I started to work in Cardiothoracic Surgery in December 2002 at the Heart Hospital asSenior House Officer (SHO). As SHO at the Heart Hospital I gained good experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery. During this time I learned a lot in preparing patients for the operation and also looking after them in the immediate postoperative period. In theatre I started opening the chest and harvesting internal thoracic artery.
In March 2003 I moved to the next level of my training in Cardiothoracic Surgery. This gave me the opportunity to improve my technical skills in operating theatre and also getting more experience in dealing with major complications which arise in ITU and on the ward. I was involved more directly in taking important decisions in performing the right operations for specific patients. I started to perform cardiac and thoracic operations, initially supervised by the Consultant and latter independently. After finishing my training and being signed off, I started to perform majority of the operation independently. I performed a significant number of patients on behalf of other Surgeons.
In January 2011, I started working at Papworth Hospital, in Heart and Lung Transplant Department and Assisted Mechanical Devices. During this time I was responsible for the training and performance of junior registrars and SHO in transplant department. I gained a large experience in managing pre, intra and postoperatively, patients who required Heart and Lung Transplant, as well as mechanical devices. I was the main retrieval Surgeon for our unit and also retrieved few Hearts and Lungs for other units within UK. During this period i performed good number of Heart and Lung Transplants. I also was the member of the surgical team who for the first time in UK performed Artificial Heart Implantation in 2011.
For the last four years, most of the cardiac and thoracic operations I have performed independently. I also have trained junior registrar to perform part of the routine cardiac and thoracic operations.
